If shopping were a sport, Black Friday would be the Olympics.
To get the best deals, you have to be at the door well before the store opens, which is most often at around 2 a.m. in the cold. Then shop with a mob of people, all of whom are grumpy and coming out of a Thanksgiving feast coma. So you really have to want to compete.
You also have to be knowledgeable and prepared; being fast and aggressive doesn't hurt either.
If you have never shopped Black Friday, you need to know that it is an entirely different animal than everyday shopping. Expect mobs of people, long lines and for many of the extremely low-priced items, they will go very fast (sometimes within minutes of the store opening in the wee hours of the morning). Be prepared for disappointment, you may not get that deeply discounted item.
So is Black Friday shopping worth it? Our answer: sometimes, depending on what you are purchasing. For example, is it worth getting out of bed at 3 a.m., standing in the cold and then waiting in line at the register for an hour to save $15 on a toaster? We don't think so. However, it is worth it to save $200 on a laptop.
You just have to weigh that for yourself.
We suggest prioritizing your purchases based on the amount of money you save versus the percentage of discount that is being offered. Where you go on Black Friday should be determined first on what you need and secondly based on how much money you will save.
In this economy, really great bargains are not hard to find. However, you want to find the lowest price and Black Friday may be your best bet because stores offer limited time items at significantly reduced prices to get you in the door. It's just a matter of being one of the first through the door and to that item.
Preparing for Black Friday is key. You can view "leaked sales circulars" online at a plethora of sites. This can help you begin to formulate a strategy, but do not rely on those sales until you see the actual print ad in the Thanksgiving newspaper.
You can also verify sales on the store's Web site. When checking sale prices, realize that a retailer's online store does not always match the deal you will find in the store, that's why getting your local newspaper is so critical.
First lady Michelle Obama chose to wear a gleaming silver-sequined, cream-colored gown Tuesday night to the first state dinner held by her husband's administration. She was tending to her hostess duties in a strapless silhouette with the beads forming an abstract floral pattern that was custom-made by Naeem Khan.
She wore a matching wrap, a stack of bangle bracelets on her wrist and dangling earrings.
The guests of honor at the dinner were Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife, Gursharan Kaur, making Mrs. Obama's choice of the Indian-born, U.S.-based designer seem very appropriate.
Earlier today for a preview of the event, Mrs. Obama wore a skirt by Rachel Roy, also an Indian-American. "That gave us a preview that she was going to use clothes to convey a meaning," said Mary Tomer, author of the new book "Mrs. O: The Face of Fashion Democracy."
"They were really thoughtful choices," she said.
"The nice thing about it is the Jackie Kennedy sort of appropriateness. Most people wouldn't know one way or another about Naeem's background, but if one sentence gets mentioned to the prime minister, then her subtleness would pay off," added Hal Rubenstein, fashion director for InStyle magazine.
Khan told CNN's Larry King that his goals were to dress the first lady in something "Indian, chic, simple but very glamorous."
Rubenstein said he was impressed that Mrs. Obama used her fashion knowledge to choose a sophisticated and regal style that paid homage to India without wearing a traditional sari-style dress, which could have come off as a costume next to India's first lady.
"I think she looks fabulous," said Tomer. "She walked out in something that's figure-flattering and chic. Naeem's work is known for glamour and embellishment and this dress seems to embody that. She's sparkling and radiant."
Designer Khan is no stranger to helping women make a grand entrance; he has become a fixture on the Hollywood red-carpet circuit, dressing Beyonce, Carrie Underwood, Katherine Heigl and even Queen Noor of Jordan. Mrs. Obama's gown took three weeks at the designer's family workshop in India — with 40 people working on it — to complete, Khan said.
Of Mrs. Obama, Rubenstein said: "She looks like she's worth her weight in solid gold. What I love about her is that it's a pleasure to watch a woman of size and stature not apologize for her height and know how to stand tall."
President Barack Obama also drew Rubenstein's praise in his classic-style tuxedo. "I often feel Obama's suits are too big on him, but I think he got a new tux."
Adam Lambert says his tumble during his American Music Awards performance was not planned.
He told MTV News that he thought he probably looked ridiculous but when he looked at the tape of his performance, he was happy about how he recovered.
"My foot got caught on a stand and I hit the platform and I didn't know what was going on,"Lambert told MTV, "and I was, 'okay, I got to get up and turn around' and it was like when you are spraying a cockroach and his legs are going up in the air, that's what I felt I looked like. I thought I looked so ridiculous crazy. But when I went back and watched it I said, 'whoa, ninja roll.'"
Jennifer Lopez, also known as J.Lo, took a spill and fell during her performance of her song, "Louboutins" during this years American Music Awards, the AMAs. The performance was on the ABC network on Sunday night. J.Lo's dance was the theme of a boxing-match; She and several of her dancers appeared from the crowd in Los Angeles at the Nokia Theater and headed straight to a boxing ring on stage. During the peak of the dance, J Lo used the backs of the male dancers to climb up. As she reached the top of the dancers back, she took a leap and happened to land directly on her behind. As a great performer should, she continued immediately with her dance routine and finished strong; but surely not strong enough for people to notice and reveal the mishaps.
We made it to the 37th International Emmys last night and got a quick word with Sir David Frost, who has interviewed every US president since 1969: looks like he'll be interviewing President Obama in the next six months. The host of the event was the perpetually cheerful and energetic Graham Norton whose "The Graham Norton Show" can be found on BBC America every Saturday night. Also, Dr. Henry Kissinger was there to present an award to Germany's ZDF TV for actively broadcasting western programming into East Germany during the Cold War. --- Programming Notes: Marvel's Jonathan Hickman will reveal a new project on G4's "Attack of the Show" tonight at 7pm. "Sons of Anarchy" has been so great the past couple weeks: we can't wait to see Jax and Clay load up for bear as they take on The League tonight. Late night: Conan's got Weezer and Fallon's got The Pixies - NBC is firing on all cylinders. --- We mentioned that ABC had stopped production on "Cougar Town" so that Courtney Cox could deal with some personal family issues and now ABC has stopped production on "FlashForward" for six days. The network said the hiatus was planned to "maintain the high quality of the show" but there might be some retooling going on as the series hit a ratings low last week. --- Are you over the "Twilight" hype? After explaining his identity, background and own "Dark Passenger," this week's episode dove head first into his family who aren't as Norman Rockwell as Arthur Mitchell might want Dexter and the rest of the world to believe. It turns out they are probably the most interesting aspect of Mitchell's twisted life and could turn out to be a huge asset to bringing the man down, now that he no longer has them in his upper hand.

Military and federal officials investigating Thursday's mass shooting at this sprawling Army post spent the weekend poring over evidence they seized from the apartment of the alleged shooter, Army Maj. Nidal M. Hasan, including his computer and multiple e-mail accounts he may have controlled, according to a law enforcement source.Investigators have interviewed 170 witnesses and plan to question more as they try to piece together what might have motivated Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, to gun down 12 soldiers and one civilian, Army officials said.
Hasan was sitting with hundreds of other soldiers, filling out paperwork in a cubicle, when he suddenly stood up and opened fire, said Army officials. More than a dozen of those who were killed and wounded Thursday were soldiers who were close to deploying with him and would have served alongside him in Afghanistan as mental health professionals.
Two of those killed were captains; one was a psychologist who had come to America barely able to read English. Of the 38 who were injured Thursday, fewer than half remain hospitalized. Two victims remain in the surgical critical unit.
All evidence suggests that Hasan acted alone, said a spokesman for the Army's Criminal Investigative Division and investigators have released no information that would link the case to a terrorist group. Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) told reporters at a news conference Saturday that the shooting was an "isolated" incident, and President Obama, after being briefed by FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III, cautioned that the public should not rush to judgment about the case.

As the king fades, Shrek (married to the princess) fills in. Alas, an ogre lacks the subtlety for some tasks: When he christens a ship, it sinks; when he declares someone a knight, his sword inflicts pain.
So Shrek seeks a successor to the throne - Arthur Pendragon, a clumsy teen whose former mentor (Merlin) had a nervous breakdown. First, they must stop Prince Charming's coup.
Clearly, this is a comedy aimed at all ages. Kids will like the action (some of it a tad violent), the animation and the occasional silliness; adults will like the wit, plus the guest voices. Justin Timberlake (as Arthur or Artie) joins returning actors Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz.
National Geographic examines messiahs
TONIGHT'S MIGHT-SEE: "The First Jesus?" 9 p.m., National Geographic.
At about the time Jesus was born, some stories say, a man who was considered a Jewish messiah was slain. The Romans killed him, then crucified his followers.
Very little of this was written down, but one stone tablet - open to interpretation - implies that God told him to rise from the dead after three days. This mildly interesting film goes to Jerusalem and Jericho to view the tablet and catch opposing views of scholars. There were several would-be messiahs, it says; Jesus may have repeated some things they did, but his turn-the-other-cheek approach was unique.
