EMPLOYEE DETAINED; POLICE CALL HIM 'PERSON OF INTEREST'

Raymond Clark III, an animal lab technician who works for Yale, has emerged as a person of interest in the investigation into the murder of Annie Le MED ’13, law enforcement officials said Tuesday night.

Police said they served two warrants Tuesday night — one to search Clark’s residence in Middletown, Conn., and another to take DNA samples from his body. Still, police did not call him a suspect and did not serve Clark, 24, with an arrest warrant.

Police stood sentry outside the Middletown, Conn., apartment complex throughout the day on Tuesday.

New Haven Police Department Chief James Lewis said at a hastily convened press conference that Clark would be released last night if he complied with the warrants, though police officials could not be reached for comment early Wednesday to confirm whether he was still being detained.

Lewis said Clark has been under watch since Le’s body was found Sunday, which was supposed to be her wedding day.

“We’ve been with him since we took this case over,” Lewis said, though he declined to comment on Clark’s possible motive.

Over 20 law enforcement officers entered his apartment in Middletown just before the press conference began in New Haven and escorted him into a car for transport to a police facility. Clark wore a white T-shirt and dark pants and was handcuffed as he left his apartment.

An evidence-gathering team from the NHPD arrived on the scene shortly after to search the residence. Lewis said authorities hope the evidence they gather there can be matched to some of the more than 150 pieces of evidence seized from the Yale research facility at 10 Amistad St. where Le’s body was found. Lewis added that police have reviewed 700 hours of video footage and interviewed 150 people, sometimes more than once, as part of the investigation.

Law enforcement officials focused their efforts on the narrow pool of people who had access to the basement and who may have encountered Le after she entered the building at 10 a.m. last Tuesday, University President Richard Levin said at a meeting of the medical school community Monday afternoon. Access to the basement area where her corpse was found is a restricted to specially authorized individuals who must use their Yale identification cards to access the floor.

A fellow animal technician said yesterday that Clark would have been intimately familiar with the basement where Le’s body was found because he spent most of his day in just two or three rooms there, tending to the research animals and cleaning their cages. The technician, who was told not to talk to the press, said Clark had worked at Yale for a few years, though his sister and her husband have worked at Yale for much longer.

Levin said in an interview Tuesday that Yale continues to assist investigators, though the NHPD is now in charge of the case.

“This really is in the hands of law enforcement at this point,” he said, “and so all we can do is be patient and wait for the results of the DNA test.”

Lewis said the tests would be finished in 24 to 72 hours.

Outside the apartment complex in Middletown, throngs of reporters gathered throughout the day as Clark’s name leaked out from investigators. Lewis said at the press conference that Clark has retained an attorney, and a person who works with Clark said Clark, his sister, brother-in-law and fiancée did not show up for work on the medical school campus on Tuesday.

At the Higganum, Conn., house where the suspect’s sister and brother-in-law live, the blinds were closed, and shortly before 6 p.m. two people wearing hoods ran out of the house and into a black SUV.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Connecticut was supposed to release the cause of Le’s death on Tuesday afternoon but instead announced it would withhold that information indefinitely at the request of prosecutors. At the press conference, Lewis declined to comment on a report in The Hartford Courant that said Le died of asphyxiation.

A few hours before the press conference last night, Dennis Smith, a local pastor, read a statement in front of Woodbridge Hall on behalf of the Le family. As reporters crowded around him, Smith thanked the Yale community for its support and for respecting the family’s privacy.

“Our loss would have been immeasurably more difficult to cope with without their support,” he said on behalf of the family.

Raymond Clark III

Raymond Clark III has been taken in for questioning by police in the Annie Le murder case at Yale University.

Raymond Clark III has been declared a "person of interest" by police investigating the murder of the Yale Student, Annie Le, whose body was found stuffed into a wall in a medical facility on Sunday, the day that was to have been her wedding day.

It must be emphasised that Raymond Clark III has not been arrested and is not being charged: he is at this time helping the police with their enquiries. DNA will be taken and if that exonerates him then he will be released, say police. The police have more than 150 pieces of evidence from the crime scene and want to compare that with DNA from Raymond Clark III.

The police also have more than 700 hours of video tape and computer records of who had access to the building to do through.

Annie Le was a post graduate student doing work in the labs at the medical facility: Raymond Clark III was a technician working in the same labs.

A tribute to Jackson, a 2nd speech for Swift at VMAs

NEW YORK — Planned and random acts of kindness reigned at the MTV Video Music Awards at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday night.

Among the planned acts: Janet Jackson's opening tribute to her brother Michael, whose death at age 50 on June 25 rocked the music world.

The production began with Madonna recalling her encounter with Michael and reminding the audience that "Michael Jackson was a hero." And while "he seemed otherworldly," she added, "he was also a human being."

And then, the performance began. Dancers crept up on stage with original Thrillervideo airing in the background. The dancers' moves duplicated the ones being performed on the video.

Then a sequence of Michael's hits played. Bad and Smooth Criminal led to Scream, his duet with Janet, who broke through glass to make her way onstage and sing along with the video. The loud, almost angry performance had the audience on its feet.

After the tribute, Madonna said backstage that "it was good to finally get to say my piece."

And then near the end of the show, in a gracious act of kindness, video-of-the-year winner Beyoncé offered young country music star Taylor Swift a second chance to say her piece with an acceptance speech.

The moment came after Kanye West took everyone by surprise early in the show when he went onstage to interrupt Swift's acceptance speech for best female video for You Belong With Me.

West grabbed the microphone from Swift and said to her "Taylor, I'm really happy for you, and I'm gonna let you finish, but," and West then declared that Beyoncé, who had also been listed as a nominee in the category for Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It), "had one of the best videos of all time." Camera shots showed both women looking startled. Swift was then hurried off the stage without finishing her speech.

The teen country star returned for her live performance of You Belong With Me later in the show.

Celebrities reacted backstage.

Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong said, "Well, you know, she's young, I think she'll get over it. I think he needs to get it over it also. It was very uncomfortable sitting there."

"I feel bad for Taylor," said Kristin Cavallari. "I think it was really disrespectful."

After the show, Kanye West apologized on his blog for the outburst: "I'M SOOOOO SORRY TO TAYLOR SWIFT AND HER FANS AND HER MOM. I SPOKE TO HER MOTHER RIGHT AFTER AND SHE SAID THE SAME THING MY MOTHER WOULD'VE SAID. SHE IS VERY TALENTED!"

Other music-related news items had guests talking at the awards show, too. American Idol's Kara DioGuardi was asked about her new colleague at the judges' table, Ellen DeGeneres. "I feel fantastic. I feel ecstatic. I can't wait for January, when we can all be on the panel."

DioGuardi added that she has been in touch with former judge Paula Abdul. "I've spoken to her, and she seems to be doing really well, and that's what matters." Abdul is set to play host at the VH1 Divas special on MTV's sister network on Thursday night (9 ET/PT).

Faye Dunaway had two divas she was looking forward to seeing on Sunday at the VMAs. "Lady Gaga and Beyoncé. How could you not love Beyoncé?" Dunaway asked.

Ne-Yo echoed Dunaway's sentiment. When asked who he was rooting for, he replied, "Besides myself?" and then added, "I'm here to see Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Pink, everyone. I'm here just to enjoy the electricity."

And the atmosphere was electric, with returning host Russell Brand doling out his brash brand of humor. Among the stars: Jennifer Lopez, Alicia Keys, Eminem, Jermaine Jackson, Katy Perry, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.

Kelly Clarkson, Kellie Pickler Take Aim At Kanye West's VMA Outburst Mary-Kate Olsen and 'Hills' star Spencer Pratt also come to Taylor Swift's defens

It's no surprise "Kanye's" and "#teamtaylor" are among Twitter's top 10 trending topics early Monday morning (September 14) following Kanye West's outburst at the Video Music Awards, where he interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech for Best Female Video to protest on behalf of Beyoncé.

In addition to the outcry of fan support for Swift, fellow celebrities continue to bolster the 19-year-old singer via Twitter and blog messages. The latest celebrity to come to Swift's defense is fellow VMA nominee Kelly Clarkson, who penned an open letter to West on her blog.

"Dear Kanye, what happened to you as a child??" Clarkson wrote. "Did you not get hugged enough?? Something must have happened to make you this way and I think we're all just curious as to what would make a grown man go on national television and make a talented artist, let alone teenager, feel like sh--. I mean, I've seen you do some pretty sh---y things, but you just keep amazing me with your tactless, a--hole ways. It's absolutely fascinating how much I don't like you. I like everyone. I even like my a--hole ex that cheated on me over you ... which is pretty odd since I don't even personally know you. The best part of this evening is that you weren't even up for THIS award and yet you still have a problem with the outcome. Is winning a Moonman that much of a life goal?? You can have mine if it will shut you up. Is it that important, really??

"I was actually nominated in the same category that Taylor won, and I was excited for her ... so why can't you be??" the letter continued. "I'm not even mad at you for being an a--hole ... I just pity you because you're a sad human being. On a side note, Beyoncé has always been a class act and proved again tonight that she still is. Go TEXAS!! Taylor Swift, you outsell him ... that's why he's bitter. You know I love your work! Keep it up girl!"

Immediately following the incident, celebrities like Katy Perry, Pink and Paramore's Haley Williams took to their Twitter accounts to express distaste for the stunt. Swift's close friend, country artist Kellie Pickler, tweeted, "Tator Tot, you handled yourself with Grace. Kanye, go grow some f-ing balls, bi---! don't mess w/my lil sis!!"

Mary-Kate Olsen took a more diplomatic approach, praising Beyoncé for giving Swift the chance to finish her speech. "I'm so glad Beyoncé gave Taylor her moment," Olsen tweeted. "She knows what's best!" "The Hills" star Spencer Pratt acknowledged that even he wouldn't pull a stunt like that. "Let's be very clear: King Spencer would never do anything like what Kanye just did to a sweet soul like Taylor!" Pratt tweeted.

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards might have wrapped, but the party is far from over. Stay tuned for behind-the-scenes updates, party reports and much more.
